So ever since Carl announced RIP III I’ve been wandering around the house looking for suitable books to use as my pool for the challenge.
And even though there are more I could add, I think I’m going to plump for the following list from which to complete Peril the First, where I have to read four books of any length from any subgenre of scary stories I choose:
- The Terror by Dan Simmons [6 September]
- Duma Key by Stephen King
- Come Closer by Sara Gran
- Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist [25 September]
- Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror by Chris Priestley [3 October]
- Midwinter of the Spirit by Phil Rickman
- Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill [14 September]
- Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
I would love to have included The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman but it doesn’t come out in the UK until the end of October as far as I can tell.
I also intend to round off the challenge with my annual viewing of The Nightmare Before Christmas, which seems fitting given Carl’s fabulous challenge button!

So glad you’re in, thank you so much for being a part of this. I like your pool of books, hopefully Gaiman’s book will make an early appearance and we can all squeeze it in for this challenge.
Love the idea of including NBX this time of year, perfectly fitting with the challenge!!

You have an interesting pool and I can’t wait to hear what you’ll think of Hill’s book. I love Heart-Shaped Box! Worthy pick indeed! And we both have Bradbury’s book on our pool 🙂

Carl – alas I don’t think I’m going to be in luck with The Graveyard Book! But we can but live in hope
Stephanie – I’ve heard great things about it too, and have got a hold of Twentieth Century Ghosts which has also had good reviews
Lightheaded & Nymeth – I’m really looking forward to the Bradbury, it seems fitting so close to his 88th birthday, and of course I saw and loved the film years ago

I recently listened to a radio dramatization of Something Wicked This Way Comes and really enjoyed it. I would love to read the book sometime, too.

[…] Bridge of the Book God has a family thing going on in her list with Stephen King’s Duma Key and A Heart-Shaped Box written by his son Joe Hill. And while the comparisons between Hill and King cannot be stopped Hill holds his ground with his dad. Colette, one of the contributors to the Plainfield Public Library District blog was recommending it to people before she finished the first chapter and said that it “was the best, hands down book of the whole summer.” […]

Quixotic
Nice list!
As far as The Graveyard Book goes, I’m far too impatient and am going to get my copy from the US.
Excellent list, I found Heart Shaped Box truly enjoyable and am reading Joe Hill’s 20th Century Ghosts for the challenge.
Your list reminded me, I really need to gra a copy of Duma Key!

I’ve been trying to get a copy of “Let the Right One In” since I saw it on your blog in May!!! I hope you like MIdwinter of the Spirit. I love all the Merrily Watkins books, and some are very eerie and have chilling moments. You and I both have The Terror (I’m hoping to read it this weekend while my husband watches all the World Cup qualifier matches on tv! We apparently get 5!!!) and Duma Key, which I’ve requested in pb and is due early Oct…..this is a really good list you have, Bride!

Danielle – I’ve only ever seen the film version, but would imagine this would do very well on radio; I’m told it’s a very good read.
Quixotic – I thought about doing the same but decided to wait; thanks for your comments on the list, I was aiming for variety….
Susan – I’ve read the first Merrily Watkins and am looking forward to the remainder; I’ve read several of Rickman’s other books and chilling is an excellent word to describe thhem. I’ve only got 100 pages of The Terror to go and I’m really impressed; I’ll be very interested to hear what you think.

The Nightmare Before Christmas « Bride of the Screen God
[…] November 14, 2008 in Reviews, Revisited | Tags: Animation, Fantasy, The Great Elfman, Tim Burton This is without a doubt one of my absolute all-time favourite films which I first became aware of on a trip to New York in 1993, went to see as soon as it came to London and once I got my hands on a recording (first VHS, then DVD) I have watched it at least twice a year, once at Hallowe’en, the other (surprise, surprise) at Christmas. My first viewing this year was to mark the completion of Carl’s RIP III challenge which I talk about here. […]
