The first James Herbert Award for horror fiction now has a shortlist:
- The Girl With All the Gifts – MR Carey
- The Troop – Nick Cutter
- Cuckoo Song – Frances Hardinge
- The Loney – Andrew Michael Hurley
- Bird Box – Josh Malerman
- An English Ghost Story – Kim Newman
I have half of the shortlist. Cuckoo Song and An English Ghost Story are on my TBR pile, and I read (and loved) The Girl With All the Gifts (my review is here). The others are unknown to me but I’ve gone off to have a look. I will be very interested to see what will win.

I’ll be interested to see how this goes as well. I’ve also only read the Carey book but I read some incredibly creepy reviews for Bird Box!

I must admit the three I don’t have all look interesting and are now on my wish list. Looking at these things is dangerous 😀

I was a little surprised Cuckoo Song qualified as horror! It’s creepy, certainly, but I’ve had called it fantasy, not horror. Though of course I am happy it’s nominated for an award — I read it in January and thought it was terrific.

Yes, I thought she was more of a fantasy author but horror is becoming a very loose term these days (not that I’m complaining about that!)
