Ooh, I thought I was being SO clever, posting my reading plans for the month earlier today and totally forgetting that Carl’s Sci-fi Experience now starts in December and runs until my birthday (31st January in case you’re interested and that has got to be the earliest hint I’ve ever given!)
So hasty thinking has taken place and I’m going to (try to) read the following as a minimum for the experience that isn’t a challenge (and they also comply with the TBR DDD as they are already all on the stacks chez Bride):
- The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K le Guin – because she was interviewed in the first episode of the excellent BBC series Tomorrow’s Worlds and I am ashamed, ashamed I say, to admit that if I have ever read any of her work I have long, long forgotten it…..
- Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes – because it is a classic and my great friend Silvery Dude was reduced to a blubbering wreck reading it (I may possibly be using poetic licence there)….
- The Starry Rift edited by Jonathan Strahan – because I love short stories and I sought this out after the amazing experience of hearing Neil Gaiman read his entry in the collection Orange at an event earlier in the year which I seem not to have written about at all….
- A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge – because it’s one of the Book God’s favourites and he has been trying to get me to read it since we started living together 20 years ago and I think it’s about time…
Exciting! I also have the urge to watch 2010 again (I love that movie and will punch anyone who disagrees, OK?)

You went to a Gaiman event? Cool!!! I read the first couple of stories in that collection, but haven’t gotten back to it. I need to!
I’m so glad you are joining us, and how perfect that it winds up on your birthday! Looks like you have some nice reading plans ahead…sorry I messed ’em up a bit.

I went to his Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains multi-media event in London in July, and it was (as you would expect) fantastic! Signed book (though not meeting the man himself sadly). 2014 has been a good reading year so far, looking forward to it continuing!

My reading numbers have been waaaay down this year, but I’ve mostly liked what I’ve read, so not complaining. I’ve done a lot more gaming this year, which accounts for some of the decreased numbers.

Hallo, Hallo! 🙂
I’m a 2nd Year at SFE! 🙂 To be honest — I accidentally found out the official sign-ups were posted AND that we get a full extra month! 🙂 I had to give myself an extension for Sci Fi November (two weeks) and did not even realise by doing so I can cross-promote the reviews & goodies coming to my blog! I wrote two separate blog posts (there is a link to the update missive at the very bottom of my SFE post!) — today’s inclusion to the SFE was completely spontaneous just like yours!
I honestly did not even plan it — I’m letting it materialise as the weeks & days evolve and want to appreciate it more than I could last year! 🙂 If I can knock off some more Bingo Squares between the two Sci Fi Bingo Cards I’m working on, even better! I love the suspense of wondering which story will work well for which space on the cards! lol I’m such a vintage gamer! lol
Le Guin is on my list to read at some point — I believe I put her on my 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy Challenge but I could be mistaken. If I can add to that list and/or read off the ones I put on either that one or my tCC (The Classics Club) I’ll be plumb happy! Right now, I’m focusing on reading a trilogy by Kate Elliott (steampunk) + one standalone steampunk! Quirky!
The Starry Rift has crossed my desk at some point — earmarked to read on a random list I wrote or typed somewhere — brings up a good point! I need to create a new Riffle List to keep track of books I find between SFN + SFE!
Happy to meet you & I look forward to your posts!
PS: Two of my favourite sci-fi movies of all-time growing up (outside of Trek & Wars) were: 2001 + 2010! I was the ONLY kid I knew watching them with such wicked fascination too! 🙂 Rock on!

Sunday Salon – January round-up | Bride of the Book God
[…] the Sci-Fi experience – over the two months the challenge ran I managed 1 x novel, 3 x standalone (i.e. not in a collection) short stories and 2 x movies. Not bad, but would have liked to read more, just couldn’t find the right thing. But I’m sure there will be more sci-fi throughout the year…. […]
